STAMFORD CENTRAL SCHOOL

Stamford, New York

An Excellent Place!!

THE COMMUNITY

The community encompassed by the Stamford Central School District is located in Delaware County in the Northern Catskills, and is considered rural. Stamford is a half hour east from Oneonta and an hour and a quarter south west of Albany. While some farming exists, the largest employers in the area are Robinson Terrace, a residential and rehabilitation center, Catskill Craftsmen, Audiosears Corporation, and Mallinckrodt, Inc. in nearby Hobart. People also drive to work at Fox Hospital, SUNY Oneonta, and Hartwick College in Oneonta. Many people from the New York metropolitan area have second homes in the community. Year-round recreation exists throughout the region.

The Village of Stamford has had the same population, approximately 1,200 people, for over 100 years. Post-secondary institutions such as SUNY Agricultural and Technical Colleges at Delhi and Cobleskill, SUNY Oneonta, and Hartwick College are within a 25-mile radius. Situated in a beautiful area, Stamford will be particularly attractive to someone who enjoys the advantages of rural living with a resort community flavor.

THE STAMFORD CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

Stamford Central School is a rural school with approximately 500 students K-12. Class sizes are under 20 students. The district stands out as one of the top schools in the local BOCES both academically and environmentally.

Stamford enjoys the benefits of taxpayers who support the school. Budgets and building projects pass, new school buses are added when needed, and the school serves as a primary social center for the village. The school boasts three fully networked computer classrooms with access to the Internet, and a distance-learning classroom. The school is rightfully proud of a 79% New York State Regents diploma rate for the class of 2000 and the number of students who graduate with college credits. The academic program is proactive for a small school with students placing very high on elementary achievement testing and Regents graduate percentages are among the best in the state. Stamford Central School graduates have been accepted into prestigious universities such as Harvard, Cornell, Middlebury, the United States Naval Academy, MIT, RIT and Syracuse University.

A full range of educational and extracurricular programs are available and are taught by a full-time staff of 42 teachers, assisted by BOCES itinerant personnel. The average class size is 18-20 students. Stamford Central is a component of the Otsego Northern Catskills BOCES and takes advantage of programs and services available through BOCES.

In addition, Stamford devotes an extraordinary amount of funds and effort in making our challenged students proud and contributing members of society. In recent years, the Stamford Central School District has been an early and well-respected leader in implementing an All-Regents Program and the Comprehensive Development Educational Planning (CDEP). The shared decision making team at the school initiated an intervention process that assesses the needs of special needs children before they are ever referred for IEP evaluation.
